Visit at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange

On May 5th, the bilingual Business Studies and Economics class 12/1 went on a trip to Frankfurt/Main to visit the stock exchange.

We left Wiesbaden at around 8:30 a.m. and when we arrived, there was still enough time to grab a coffee before we went on our tour. After the short break we were welcomed by an employee of the Deutsche Börse Group who was our guide for that morning.

First, we took part in a presentation on the history of the stock exchange in Frankfurt and learnt how things changed over the decades. Our guide explained the trading systems and platforms to us and also mentioned basic information like for example the average value of shares traded in one day (~ 3 billion EUR). At the end of the presentation which was held in English we had the chance to ask questions and had learned a lot about the meaning of this institution.

After the presentation we attended the visitor´s gallery where we were able to watch the traders on the trading floor and had the pleasure to witness an all-time high of the DAX.

Although it was rather unspectacular to watch what was going on on the trading floor due to the fact that more than 90% of the exchange turnover is handled via the fully electronic trading system Xetra, we still gained a good insight into the exchange trading business and learned a lot about the process of trading shares. The day can be described as very informative and interesting and quite different from theoretical learning about shares in school.
